WWD 2010

Hell’s Canyon of the Snake River, the deepest canyon in North America, played host to our 3rd annual Whitewater Dentistry adventure. The river, which divides Oregon and Idaho, wanders sinuously through vertical canyon walls and blasts our senses with a new vista at each turn.

The Snake River is a classic pool-and-drop river, offering a series of smooth, relaxing water interrupted by rapids that can make you as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

The high water flows we experienced this year delivered mega-excitement in the Class III-IV rapids, with Wild Sheep Rapid slamming us with more thrills than we bargained for, but everyone lived to tell about it.

The first night we had a deer as tame as a Cocker Spaniel wandering leisurely through camp while Morgan, John, Patrick, Trevor, and Joseph prepared one of their famous gourmet meals. Across the river a black bear cavorted on the riverside boulders.

A diverse group of thrill seekers comprised our party this year, with participants from Ohio, Oregon, California, and Nevada. Gareth serenaded us around our campfires with ballads he composed about the wild lands around us and their historical inhabitants.

There is something extraordinary about living on the river for 5 days, leaving civilization behind, and becoming a part of the wild country. The rhythm of the river, the diurnal cycle of the sun, moon, and stars become your daily planner.

Abundant wildlife entertained us daily. Deer, chukar, Great Blue Herons, bald eagles, golden eagles, big horn sheep, songbirds, huge swallowtail butterflies, and elk were on display. I could hardly keep the hungry smallmouth bass off my hook. And, my personal highlight….a positive identification of a wolf on an ambitious hike with Matt high above the river canyon.

Each evening as dusk captured the canyon, Julie and I entertained our guests with presentations of the latest information in the burgeoning field of veterinary dentistry. And, we didn’t have to wake up a sleeping student once! (See the testimonial videos below.)

Once again the Winding Waters crew treated us like royalty, attending to our every need and forcing us to stuff ourselves with gourmet meals three times a day. I, for one, am still trying to regain my fighting weight after my shameless feeding frenzy.

Now the hard part…..waiting an entire year to do it all again!
